Winter Wonderland?

Colonel’s Blog, Earthdate 10 January 2025…

Hey Y’all!

Good evening and happy Fast-jet Friday from Air2Ground Farms! I spent the day keeping warm while scrolling through photos of the F-15E Strike Eagle tearing through the snow-covered valleys of Wales this week. Those fast jets always bring a little cheer to a cold day! Speaking of cold, let’s talk about this week on the farm—where winter decided to show us who’s boss. Winter farming isn’t for the faint of heart, and this week has been downright brutal. Monday brought icy roads that forced us to cancel our trip to the processor with hogs and lambs. The safety of the animals (and us) comes first, but it’s frustrating when the weather puts a wrench in the schedule. Today, we woke up to a blanket of five inches of snow. Beautiful? Sure. But try hauling water buckets through it. Makaylah said it felt like she had just done a leg workout after walking to feed the sheep through the thick snow! Chores take twice as long in these conditions, and let’s be honest—I am not a fan of the cold. Every time I step outside, I’m reminded how much I prefer warm, sunny days when everything doesn’t feel like a battle against nature. Still, the animals need us, and the work doesn’t stop, so we layer up, grit our teeth, and get it done. As much as I’d love to swap the cold for a sailboat in the British Virgin Islands, there’s a satisfaction in facing challenges head-on and knowing we’re caring for our animals, no matter what.

This week on the Dust’er Mud Podcast, we tackled a fascinating and important topic: a 16-year-old suing eleven of the biggest names in the food industry like Kraft, Kellogs, Nestle, General Mills, Coca Cola, and Pepsico. Yes, you read that right. This young trailblazer is calling out the corporations responsible for flooding our grocery stores with ultra-processed foods and misleading marketing—the same foods contributing to the obesity and metabolic health crises sweeping through this country. In the podcast, we dove into the lawsuit, the broader implications for the food industry, and the courage it takes to stand up to these giants. We also discussed how this case shines a light on the ways Big Food targets young consumers with unhealthy products disguised as “wholesome” or “natural.” It’s a sobering topic, but it’s also inspiring to see someone so young take a stand. If you haven’t listened yet, we’d love for you to tune in. We break down what this means for the future of food, and as always, we leave you with practical takeaways for how you can make informed choices for yourself and your family. https://youtu.be/FhJp7kXHXHc

Last Sunday, we published our latest video on the Air2Ground Farms YouTube channel where we cleaned up 2024’s garden and started the process of regenerating the soil for the 2025 season. I struggled mightily to move a chickshaw full of layer hens up the hill and into the garden. Check it out! https://youtu.be/2Oci87WiOok

That’s all for this week! Stay warm out there, hug your family tight, and if you’re in the Ozarks like us, enjoy the snow—but maybe from the warmth of your living room.

Cheers!
